This is a basic course in navigation, meteorology, safety, IRPCS, and general seamanship.
Courses are run on a regular basis by CUYC and those on the course are assumed to have no previous theorectical knowledge, though some limited practical experience is desirable.
Following completion of the course sucessful candidates will have all the theorectical knowledge needed for the RYA Day Skipper Practical course.
In general CUYC run a Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory course at the same time as a Day Skipper Theory course. You will start off assuming you will be taking the Yachtmaster qualification. Half way through if there are people who only wish to do Day Skipper, we will split the class and allow those that don't want to do the Yachtmaster qualification to do Day Skipper instead. Those taking the Yachtmaster course will cover material from both Day Skipper and Yachtmaster which prevents people missing out on the basic seamanship taught at Day Skipper level that is not covered in the Yachtmaster Theory syllabus and thus would be lost if students bypassed the Day Skipper Theory course all together. This arrangement also has the advantage of allowing people to choose which level of certificate to take during the course based on how they are coping with the course, rather than needing to decide at the outset which course to take. Note that you will receive either a Yachtmaster theory certificate or a Day Skipper theory certificate, depending on which you choose to go for. You will not receive both certificates.
Pre-course requirements:Some sailing experience is recommended (e.g. at least one weekend)
Course Length: 1 Term, 8 x 3hr evening sessions + last weekend of term (40 hrs teaching)
This course is requirement for: RYA Day Skipper Practical course
