Membership
Want to know more about the club? Our mailing list is open to anyone. To join, just create an account on the website. You need to be a member of the club to take part in any of our sailing or training events, but not to attend social events or to join our mailing list.
How Does Membership Work?
You will be charged a £30 annual membership fee at the same time as the first sailing or training event that you go on, so you do not need to pay anything until then.
There are 3 types of membership:
Junior - Anyone studying as an undergraduate or postgraduate at Cambridge University or any of our affiliated institutions.
Senior - Cambridge University academic and research staff, club alumni and college fellows.
Affiliate - Cambridge staff, members of affiliate clubs and the general public.
What Does Membership Include?
Membership is valid for 1 year from the date of your first trip. As a member you can apply to go on any club racing or cruising trip that is open to your membership type, and you can take part in training courses run by the club. You also qualify to pay the discounted club member rate (if offered) at club social events, such as the Christmas formal.
How to join
Joining the club mostly involves filling in a few forms on this website:
Sign up for a website account. Absolutely anybody can do this. There is no charge, and you will automatically be added to our mailing list once you have confirmed your email address.
Confirm your status. You will either be a Junior, Senior or Affiliate. See below for definitions of each of these categories.
If your status is Junior, you will normally be able to confirm this via Raven.
If your status is Senior, please email affiliation@cuyc.org.uk to confirm how you qualify (for example, Alumni, studied Important Studies at St Boltoph's College in 2002, or Postdoc at the Department of Clever Stuff).
If your status is Affiliate, then you will not need to do anything extra.
Wait until you get an email about an event that you would like to attend, or find an event on this website.
Check that the event is open to people in your membership type.
Click the "Sign Up" button on the event page.
Fill in your Crew Register. The amount that you will need to fill in depends on what kind of event you are attending. We need to know more about you for sailing events than for shore-based events.
Agree to the terms and conditions at the bottom of the Crew Register.
Fill in the sign up form for the event. We might need to know if you need to hire boots and waterproofs, or if you are have any dietary requirements. The form will make this clear.
Pay for the event (including the £30 membership charge if this is your first event or it is over 1 year since you last paid for membership).
Trip Sign-up Preference Policy
Where the number of Members who sign up for an event exceeds the number of places available for this event, the following order of preferences shall be respected:
Junior Members
Senior Members
Affiliate Members
There shall be one deadline before which Junior Members have priority on signing up, after which Senior and Affiliate Members will be considered. For weekend trips, the deadline shall be no less than 1 week before the trip. For longer trips, the deadline shall be set by the Trip Organiser, in consultation with the Vice-Commodore Sailing, and shall be no less than 3 weeks. For Training Courses, the deadline shall be set by the Training Officers in consultation with the Vice-Commodore Sailing. Trip Organisers should endeavour to find out from Senior and Affiliate Members when they need to know if there is space available for an event.
CUYC reserves the right to sign up a Senior of Affiliate Member to an event before the agreed deadline at the discretion of the CUYC Committee (for example, where the Senior or Affiliate Member has a particular attribute that would be useful or is required on the trip or course). Such cases will be agreed between the Trip Organiser, the Vice-Commodore Sailing, and the Commodore.
Crew Register
The Crew Register is what we use as a membership form. The amount of information that you need to give us depends on what kind of events you are signing up for. At a minimum, you will need to sign it to attend social events, with more information being needed for training courses and sailing trips. The form is electronic. Once you have registered, you can find the crew register form in your account pages.
The form asks you to sign to your acceptance of:

We will not share this information with any person or company not directly implicated into the organisation of Cambridge University Yacht Club activities without your explicit consent.
