Cambridge University Yacht Club's blues race team took on the Oxford University Yacht Club at the Prometheus Sailing Varsity Regatta 2023.
The howl of high winds and rhythmic tapping of halyards across the Port Solent marina hinted at challenging conditions ahead for the weekend of the 2023 Varsity Regatta.
The 2023 Varsity Regatta was sponsored by the leading UK charter company Prometheus Sailing and was staged over the weekend of 15-16th July on the Solent. The teams from Oxford and Cambridge sailed on perfectly matched Sunsail 41 monohull yachts from Prometheus Sailing’s Portsmouth base in the Port Solent Marina.
Cambridge University Yacht Club's varsity blues race team included Callum Henderson, Sabina Kyprios, Sarah Chapman, Florence Singer, Luke Vitek, Joe Dolphin, Pio Sierra, and Klara Stark.
Conditions on the Solent were challenging, and there was a distinct lack of other boats in this windy and at times wet weekend. The Cambridge and Oxford crews raced an inshore course around the Solent on Saturday and Sunday, with a stopover in Cowes for the eve. The Oxford University Yacht Club went on to secure a win in this year's varsity regatta.
Callum Henderson, Cambridge University Yacht Club Commodore, commented:
“CUYC Racing has had an ambitious year, pioneering a new offshore race project with all-student crew, and we are thrilled to conclude our season with this fantastic event organised in partnership between Cambridge and Oxford University Yacht Clubs and Prometheus Sailing."
